Palliative and Supportive Care Education (PaSCE) are pleased to announce the launch of the Advance Care Planning for Residential Aged Care Workshops for 2021. These workshops are available to all staff in residential aged care facilities and provide tailored education for these staff to increase organisational advance care planning (ACP) knowledge.

The implementation of ACP practices within residential aged care facilities promotes compliance to the Aged Care Quality Standards (2019) Standards 1, 2 and 3 and the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards, ‘Partnering with consumers’ and ‘Comprehensive care’.

Designed for

Care Workers, Assistants in Nursing, Lifestyle Coordinators, Management and Hospitality Services

Overview

Like the Palliative Care sector, Aged Care is founded upon a multi-disciplinary team. Non-clinical staff are an essential part of the residential aged care team in providing great care, supportive environments, companionship, and purpose to a resident’s life.

This workshop explores normalising Advance Care Planning (ACP) conversations for these Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACF) staff members to enable them to have the confidence and knowledge to support these conversations with carers, residents, family, and friends. It is not designed to train non-clinical staff to complete ACP with residents. Instead, it will enable ACP is supported and understood in practice.

Supporting this knowledge, the workshop will also identify what good palliative care is and their role in implementing it with their person centred care.

Learning areas

  • Recall what advance care planning is and the benefits
  • Identify triggers to advocate and support the patient

Presented by

Our events are aimed at increasing knowledge and understanding of palliative care for health professionals caring for any person with a life-limiting illness in all settings.

The education programs are facilitated by project officers in collaboration with expert palliative care clinical providers and health professionals. Tailored education to meet specific requirements is available as we continue to improve and develop our programs to meet the growing demand for palliative and supportive care education.

PaSCE is supported by Cancer Council of WA and the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network, WA Department of Health.
